Homestead's Class of 1984
20-Year Reunion is a Memory

August 10, 2004

Homestead's class of '84 - the rockinest, rowdiest, most spirited class in Homestead history, held its 20-year reunion on August 7, 2004 at the Summit Room in downtown San Jose. 234 people, including 149 classmates and graduates, attended the evening event.

The reunion began at 6:30 in the foyer of the Summit room as graduates and guests arrived on a warm evening to the smiles and hugs of friends reunited - many for the first time in 20 years.

By 7:30, the main room opened to music playing and a delicious buffet ready to feed a crowd that was clearly more interested in conversation than food. Some of us forgot to eat or didn't get enough before the alcohol kicked in! Wow, how things don't really change after 20 years!

The evening was MC'ed by Erik Foss who introduced the Reunion Committee, lead by Liz Horner. She was acknowledged for her 20+ years of service to the class as Social Manager, having organized all three of our reunions to date. The class presented her with 20 yellow and white roses, her favorite 80s movie, "Valley Girl," some legwarmers and a Madonna glove. Betty Kamas Taylor and Jackie Kortz who also contributed immensely to the event as committee members, were introduced as the two who will take over for Liz to lead the way for our 25th reunion. Senior class president Mike Fisher was also acknowledged for his hard work on the event, as were about a dozen other of our classmates for helping make the event a success.

Our nine dearly departed classmates were also acknowledged with the reading of their names and a moment of silence.

Conversation dominated the night as classmates reconnected and brought friends up to date with news of their lives over the last two decades.

Then the 80's music kicked up and dancing ensued, until it was time for raffle prizes and give-aways. Homestead sweatshirts and DVDs were given to students who won questions, like "who traveled the furthest to attend" (a few came from as far away as the East Coast), "who had the most kids," "who was married the longest," and "who works for Homestead High." There was a grand prize drawing donated by our own ASB president and Homecoming King Dan Sampson's company, Navajo Trails Adventure Camp (www.navajotrails.com). One lucky classmate won a free 2-week stay for one child next summer at the camp in southern Utah - a $1,650 value. Thanks Dan!

Music took over the remainder of the night, as students hurried to find friends and classmates and catch up before the night was over. That came much too soon and before we knew it, it was midnight and time to call it a night.

However, the reunion weekend still had one more day to go. Sunday the 8th was marked by a picnic from 11am to 3pm at De Anza Park in Sunnyvale. Dozens of students and their children enjoyed a warm, sunny day as families played in the park. Dottie the clown arrived to paint children's faces with Spiderman, princesses, Nemo fish and pirates, and to perform some magic. For the most part, it was a great chance to grab some time with friends and continue reconnecting - or make some connections that were missed the night before - and to meet the kids of some of our classmates. It's quite a legacy we're passing along to the kids!

Thanks to everyone who came and made the event what it was - truly memorable and enjoyable for all. And thanks to the spouses and significant others for hanging in there while we reconnected. We'll see you all again in five years.
